The STREAM project is enabling the detailed monitoring of the elevated sea surface temperatures (SST) around the Maltese islands observed from space. The Maltese Islands are experiencing a noteworthy surge in the SST, with some of the highest recorded temperatures in recent decades.

July 2023 witnessed unprecedented sea temperatures, recording the highest SST since 1982, reaching a domain-averaged peak of 29.7 degrees Celsius. Additionally, current SST data for November 2023, indicates a sustained higher sea temperature compared to previous years. The SST measurements for November show temperatures more than 2 degrees higher than the average SST from 1982 to 2022.

The STREAM project will be soon providing this kind of satellite-derived information as an operational service on its web portal and eventually on a dedicated mobile app.
